College Drinking and Drug Use
National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) .
Founded in 1920, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. This article is from NBERĂs Online digest, a monthly publication that summarizes recent and newsworthy NBER working papers. Two working papers are mainly discussed in this digest. In the first paper the author notes that by cracking down on underage and binge drinking, colleges also will trim the illegal use of marijuana, adding that stricter college alcohol policies, such as raising the price of alcohol or banning alcohol on campus, decrease the number of students who use marijuana. In the second paper, focusing on the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Studies in 1993, 1997, and 1999, the author noted that the data consistently showed that substance use and abuse among college students is higher than estimates from the general population.
