Heroin
Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) .
This is the Heroin Web page of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). It provides basic information on heroin, a highly addictive drug, and the most abused and the most rapidly acting of the opiates. Available statistics on the extent of use and health effects show that 14.1% of eighth graders, 18.7% of tenth graders, and 29.6% of twelfth graders surveyed in 2004 reported that heroin was "fairly easy" or "very easy" to obtain. Available data showed that during 2003, 1.0% of college students and 1.9% of young adults (ages 19-28) reported using heroin at least once during their lifetimes. Approximately 0.2% of college students and 0.4% of young adults reported past year use of heroin, and less than 0.05% of college students and 0.1% of young adults reported past month use of heroin. Additional data presented in a tabular form available include the percent of students reporting heroin use, treatment information for heroin addiction, and links to additional resources on heroin.
