Cocaine
Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) .
This Web page provides a historical overview of pure cocaine, first used in the 1880s as a local anesthetic in eye, nose, and throat surgeries and goes on to explain that cocaine is the most potent stimulant of natural origin. The Monitoring the Future study revealed that 3.4% of eighth graders, 5.4% of tenth graders, and 8.1% of twelfth graders reported using cocaine at least once during their lifetimes. In 2003, these percentages were 3.6%, 5.1%, and 7.7%, respectively. This study also noted that during 2003, 9.2% of college students and 14.7% of young adults (ages 19-28) reported using cocaine at least once during their lifetimes. Approximately 5.4% of college students and 6.6% of young adults reported past year use of cocaine, and 1.9% of college students and 2.4% of young adults reported past month use of cocaine. Treatment resources and links to fact sheets like Breaking Cocaine Sources of Supply (An overview of coca eradication efforts in the Andean region of South America) and Cocaine Publications a listing of powder and crack cocaine-related publications from various sources can also be found here.
